The Rural Midwifery Recruitment and Retention Service is provided by the New Zealand College of Midwives (NZCOM) http://www.midwife.org.nz/ and the Midwifery and Maternity Providers Organisation (MMPO) http://www.mmpo.org.nz/ in a joint venture.
Both organizations have a national maternity service focus. The MMPO and NZCOM work co-operatively on a number of projects which has proved efficient and effective, with each partner having unique expertise and experience to offer. Our organizational capabilities compliment each other encompassing the range of services required to support the Rural Midwifery Recruitment and Retention programme.
This service was born out of a need for a nationally co-coordinated approach to the recruitment and retention of midwives working in rural communities. Ultimately a lack of rural midwives impacts on rural women’s ability to access maternity care. Both the MMPO and NZCOM had highlighted gaps in service coverage of midwives in rural localities. The solution proposed was a more sustainable model to the recruitment of midwives in these areas. The Ministry of Health , issued a request for tender to provide such a service mid 2009.
NZCOM and MMPO responded to this tender. NZCOM and the MMPO proposed a nationally co-coordinated service with its own identity, but linked into the support services already available through the two organizations.
Following a competitive tendering process, the joint venture was awarded the contract in November 2009 and set about constructing this national service. Within 8 weeks the service was launched. More than 800 applications for access to the service were processed in the first few months demonstrating the strong need in the sector.
