Situated at the top of the South Island, Marlborough has a population of approximately 42,000 + residents and that number is increasing all the time. The birthing rates have remained stable at approximately 500 per annum. And no wonder with the National Parks close by, beautiful beaches, clean rivers, boating and all manner of outdoor pursuits available within minutes of the city centre of Blenheim. For those who enjoy a more leisurely pace, the region is well known for world-class wineries, arts and crafts and excellent cafes and restaurants. Garden Marlborough is a well known local event held in November each year attracting people from all over the country. Other events to note include wine and beer festivals and the bi-annual air show.
Wairau hospital provides a secondary care maternity service including Obstetrics and Neonates which supports the Lead Maternity Carers in the region as the primary maternity workforce. Home birth and water birth is actively supported in the region too.
Wairau hospital provides a comprehensive range of services and we are committed to offering women choice in their maternity care. We are BFHI accredited and high breastfeeding rates and have an excellent midwifery education programme for all midwives and multidisciplinary education opportunities such as PROMPT.
Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is fully supportive of recruitment and retention of Lead Maternity Carers in the region and can discuss additional support packages on application. Our local Maternity Quality and Safety Programme is fully integrated within our maternity services and local Lead Maternity Carers providing opportunities in quality, audit, service development and consumer engagement.
